John Wick Codexery

Rome Continental

A sanctuary in the Eternal City where the world's deadliest killers find temporary peace.

The Rome Continental is a branch of the global hotel chain that serves as a neutral ground for assassins within the High Table's jurisdiction. Located in Rome, Italy, it operates under the same strict rules as its counterparts: no "conducting business" (i.e., assassinations) on Continental grounds, and honoring the marker. It is a place where the deadly trade of the underworld pauses, allowing hitmen to rest, heal, or conduct personal affairs away from the bloodshed that defines their lives.

Lore & Background

The Rome Continental is managed by Julius, played by Franco Nero. In John Wick: Chapter 2, John Wick travels to Rome to assassinate Gianna D'Antonio, fulfilling a marker for her brother Santino. After killing Gianna, John is attacked by her bodyguard Cassian and double-crossed by Santino's mute bodyguard Ares. The ensuing fight leads John and Cassian into the Rome Continental, where they are stopped from "conducting business" by Julius. John explains that he was forced to kill Gianna due to her brother's marker. Cassian, while understanding, tells him that he cannot let the assassination go unpunished, but promises to grant him a quick death. Julius gives John safe passage back to New York.

In Their Own Story

The marble floors of the lobby reflected the soft glow of chandeliers, a stark contrast to the storm raging outside the heavy oak doors. Inside, the air smelled of espresso and old books, a sanctuary far removed from the rain-slicked streets where blood had recently been spilled. A man in a tailored suit adjusted his tie at the bar, his eyes darting nervously toward the elevator as the sound of footsteps echoed down the hall. For a moment, the bellhop's smile was genuine, unaware that the silence was merely the calm before the storm that would soon test the very limits of their neutrality.

Reader's Guide

The Rome Continental functions as a critical node in the global network of assassin safe houses, providing essential services to those bound by the High Table. Its primary goal is to maintain order and enforce the unwritten laws of the underworld, ensuring that violence does not spill into areas designated for peace. Membership within its walls is open to any known assassin who adheres to the strict code of conduct, regardless of their current standing with the High Table. However, once a blood debt is called or a contract is broken, the sanctuary can be revoked, turning the hotel into a prison rather than a refuge. In the broader conflict, this branch serves as a strategic location where key figures must negotiate or confront one another under the threat of immediate execution if rules are violated. It represents the delicate balance between the chaotic nature of the assassin's life and the rigid structure required to keep them from destroying each other completely.
